At Aurum Laboratories, our gold analysis through fire assay consists of four key stages:

Fluxing

Each sample is carefully weighed and mixed with a specialised flux containing litharge (lead oxide), soda ash, borax, or other reagents depending on sample types. This mixture helps to separate the gold from the surrounding material during the melting process. Additional reagents can be added to ensure optimal extraction for samples with complex matrices (such as sulphides or carbon).

Firing and Pouring

The prepared samples are placed into a gas-fired furnace at temperatures ranging between 1050°C and 1100°C. During this stage, the flux reacts with the sample, creating a molten mixture. The precious metal content settles into a lead button, which is then carefully poured into moulds for further refinement.

Knocking Up

Once the molten material cools, the lead button is separated from the slag. Any residual glass or impurities are removed to ensure a clean sample for the final stage.

Cupellation

The extracted lead buttons are placed in a cupellation furnace at 930-950°C, where the lead is oxidised and absorbed by a porous cupel, leaving behind a small prill containing gold and silver. This prill is then further analysed to determine the gold content with high precision.
